1980s Vintage Heart and Alphabet Afghan Crochet Pattern: Snugly and cozy, the crocheted baby afghan adapts motifs from old-fashioned cross-stitch samplers. The squares are made with sport weight yarn in afghan stitch. Once squares are crocheted, work the heart patterns, the letters, and the borders in cross-stitches with yarn and a tapestry needle. Then work the lacy edging along the outside border.
Note: The motifs of afghan are done in afghan stitch/Tunisian crochet, using a longer crochet hook that resembles a knitting needle. Instructions for afghan stitch are included but you will need an afghan hook.
Size: Approximately 43 x 43 inches. For a larger afghan, make ten more squares, five with hearts and five with numbers from one to ten.
Materials: Pingouin Pingofrance (sport weight yarn, 50-gram balls): 8 balls ecru, 4 balls blue, 1 ball light rose.
Size I-9 (5.5 mm) afghan hook;
Size G-6 (4 mm) aluminum crochet hook.
Gauge: In afghan stitch, 20 sts = 5 1⁄2 inches; 10 rows = 3 inches.
